Legislative briefs: Fish and wildlife, judiciary and Indigenous People s Day

Fish and Wildlife The Senate Fish and Game Committee voted 7-4 along party lines to advance a bill directing where captured grizzly bears may be released by the state. Senate Bill 337 from Sen. Mike Lang, R-Malta, says that Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks may only relocate grizzly bears to locations approved by the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission, and if a “conflict” bear is captured outside of a federal recovery zone, the state may not relocated the bear and must turn it over to federal authorities. FWP testified in favor of the bill, saying it would offer a more transparent process. Opponents felt the bill would cause greater confusion and limit options for state wildlife managers.

Oahu s marine protected areas do not adequately protect herbivorous reef fishes

Oahu’s marine protected areas do not adequately protect herbivorous reef fishes Marine protected areas (MPAs) around Oahu do not adequately protect populations of herbivorous reef fishes that eat algae on coral reefs. That is the primary conclusion of a study published in Coral Reefs by researchers from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). There are over 20 species of herbivorous fishes and ten species of herbivorous urchins commonly observed on Hawaiian reefs. These species eat algae that grows on reefs, a process called herbivory, that contributes to the resilience of coral reefs by preventing algae dominance that can lead to overgrowth of corals.

With this in mind, megrim, one of the biggest catches of the South West, is being renamed Cornish sole by Seafood Cornwall, part of the Cornish Fish Producers’ Organisation. The aim is to make them more appetising to us, by combining the wholesome connotations of the fisherfolk of the South West with a familiar, if technically inaccurate, word – sole. No, megrim isn’t a real sole, being from the same family as turbot and brill, although not in their league gastronomically. The one true sole is the Dover sole, and slip sole which is a small Dover sole. Lemon sole isn’t a sole either, but a relative of halibut and dab. To be fair, Dover sole hasn’t got much to do with Dover since it’s fished from Scotland to the Mediterranean.
